Namaste from Daldale!
We’ve had a fun, exciting, and successful few weeks pass by. The lessons with the “Be Healthy, Be Happy Club” have been going well so far! We’ve covered Compassion, Leadership, and this week we’re discussing Teamwork. With every lesson, we follow up with a fun activity, games, or music.
We’ve fallen into a pretty steady routine. It almost feels like we’ve been living here for years. Sunday through Thursday we have lessons from 7 to 8 pm. On Fridays, we spend half an hour teaching self-defense to the girls, while Taylor plays soccer with the boys. Then at 7 pm we all meet up for a co-ed soccer game. On Saturdays, we generally have a free day or play with the kids and in the afternoon we have a trash clean up. We’ve split the club into three separate teams: Purple, Green, and Red. Every Saturday the teams take turns to help clean up Daldale. Hopefully by having weekly cleanups, we’re spreading environmental awareness to the community and getting everyone excited for our Dust Bin project. In just a few weeks, we’ll be constructing ten dust bins to disperse around town. We’ll also be passing out reusable bags to promote sustainability.
We’ve had to revise many of the lessons and be creative with some of the activities, to tailor to the children’s needs here in Daldale. At the end of the day, we want them to have fun and learn to think critically. Last week, we hosted a big talent show to help the kids with their confidence and leadership skills. Most, if not all, of the children participated and we all had a great time! There was singing, dancing, gymnastics, acting, drawing, and someone even did the “robot.”
We’re beginning to love each and every one of them. It’s both wonderful and exhausting living here at the children’s hostel. Next week, we’ll be covering “Health” and ending the week by giving every child a “health kit,” composed of a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a bar of soap. Then we’ll be spending a week in Meghauli to assist with the Dust Bin and Reusable Bag project there.
Look for more updates coming soon!
