Clinic Nepal Friendship Health Clinic Home Visit with Nilam Bhujel
Nilam Bhujel, 14, lives in Dharanpur, Meghauli of the Chitwan district of Nepal. She stays with her grandmother, her mother, Sonu, and her older brother, Milan, 17. Nilam attends Paramount English Boarding School in the 7th grade and her favorite subject in school is English. She has been sponsored to attend school since she was in kindergarten by Clinic Nepal, and also was involved in the Friendship Scout Troop in Meghauli. However, for the past few months, Nilam has not been able to go to scout meetings, nor attend class, and therefore she missed her exams. The reason for Nilam having to stay at home all started with a bruise. A little over a year ago, Nilam noticed a bruise on her right shin, just below her knee. It did not cause her pain at first, but over time the bruise grew larger and it became painful for her to walk. Five months ago, Nilam had an X-ray done and was given a prescription to help the problem heal but instead it worsened. Nilam got an MRI in Kathmandu because the bruise had spread to being approximately 4cm around and the doctor suspected it might be cancerous. Recently, Nilam and her family received the results back to discover that she does have a cancerous tumor in her right shin. She is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment. Her doctors say that they may have to cut off her right leg to keep the cancer from spreading.
In one short year, Nilam’s life has been turned upside down and the close-knit village of Meghauli all share her pain and worry. Cancer treatment and associated surgery are both expensive procedures that Nilam and her family simply cannot afford. Friends of Clinic Nepal believe that Nilam can have a bright future and would like to help her achieve her goal of becoming a staff nurse in Meghauli to help others.
